This commemorative ornament depicts the front entrance to Ursuline Academy, and the statue of Jesus that has greeted students, parents, alumnae, and visitors to the Academy since 1950. The European blown glass and hand-painted ornament, was handcrafted exclusively for Ursuline by Landmark Creations of Bishop, California.

The art of glass blowing can be traced to the second half of the first century BC. It began along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea and quickly spread through the Roman Empire. The forms most commonly blown were vases, oil lamps and glasses. Glass ornament blowing began in Germany, Poland and Czechoslovakia about 150 years ago where Christmastime decoration and religious traditions are particularly strong. Almost obliterated during the Communist era, glass ornament blowing is once again experiencing resurgence. Each ornament requires painstaking craftsmanship and attention to detail, so that one ornament may take an entire week to produce.

Proceeds from ornament sales support Ursuline’s Scholarship Fund. Ornaments come in gift boxes and make perfect for gifts to students, parents, faculty or alumnae. Ornaments cost $50 and may be purchase in the Mardi Gras Office in St. Joe’s Hall, or you may purchase an ornament online. For an additional $5, ornaments will be shipped within the U.S.
