Since the first Mardi Gras Ball in 1991, more than $14 million (including endowment earnings and net Mardi Gras Ball proceeds) has been awarded to provide an Ursuline education to girls who otherwise would not have been able to attend. During the 2011-12 school year, the Academy granted approximately $892,600 in financial assistance and merit awards to 196 deserving young women (24% of this year’s enrollment) as a result of endowment earnings and the net proceeds from the 2010 event.

Recognition of endowed scholarship donors at Mardi Gras began in 1998 when Mary Lee and Fritz Duda presented the first Mardi Gras endowed scholarship from The Duda Family Foundation. More than 60 endowed scholarships and faculty endowments have been established through Mardi Gras over the past ten years.

Endowment

Each year the Mardi Gras Ball recognizes new named endowed gifts to the Ursuline Scholarship Endowment and Faculty Endowment. Named endowed gifts are established with a single contribution, or pledge with multi-year payment options, or several donations totaling $50,000 or more.

To learn more about how you can join others in providing scholarships for tomorrow by establishing a named endowment that will be celebrated at Mardi Gras 2012, contact Christy Frazer, Director of Institutional Advancement at 469.232.3584 or cfrazer@ursulinedallas.org.

Scholarship Endowment
Named Endowed Scholarships

Since the early 1980s, hundreds of young women have benefited from the generous support of those who have given endowed scholarships to Ursuline Academy of Dallas. Each year, thanks to these donors, the Academy is able to provide financial assistance and merit scholarship awards for deserving students.

Endowed scholarships are established with a single major gift or pledge with multi-year payment options, or several donations totaling $50,000 or more. The endowed principal amount needed to annually fund a full scholarship award is $300,000.

The John P. Flavin Endowed Scholarship Society was created to honor all donors who have given endowed scholarships to Ursuline. Mr. Flavin, a strong believer in Catholic education, is a major donor who has funded multiple scholarships. He has bequeathed Ursuline in his will to ensure his annual scholarship awards will continue in perpetuity.

Hispanic Endowed Scholarship Program

In 2004, two Ursuline families came to Sr. Margaret Ann Moser to express their desire to establish a Hispanic scholarship program for the Academy. A Leadership Council was established with a commitment to raising $3 million. David and Martha Alameel launched the Hispanic Endowed Scholarship Program with the first gift of $300,000.

The Leadership Council members invite other individuals in the Dallas community to join them in this effort to educate young Hispanic women leaders. A $3 million endowment will ultimately provide 10 full scholarships annually. The principal amount needed for one full scholarship is $300,000. Gifts of any amount are welcome.

Faculty Endowment

“Great Teachers Make a Great School” is one of the five goal areas of the Ursuline Academy of Dallas strategic plan. A key strategy in support of this goal is to establish a Faculty Endowment of $10 million that will help Ursuline achieve the following:

  • Provide competitive faculty salaries and benefits, while keeping tuition as affordable as possible.
  • Maintain professional development funding to 1.5% of the Academy operating budget, a standard for Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) member schools.
  • Establish special faculty programs to encourage curriculum development and research activities.
  • Expand programs for visiting scholars and speakers.

A strong Faculty Endowment will help Ursuline Academy ensure excellence in Catholic education for decades to come.

“With the scholarship that you have endowed, you have provided me with an opportunity to attend Ursuline for another year. When I was accepted last year, I was overjoyed! Being a part of the student body has been much more than I expected. I love everything about Ursuline including the atmosphere, teachers, traditions and my classmates. I mostly enjoy the happiness and kindness that I experience every day. Thank you for blessing my family and me. Your generosity is appreciated more than you may ever know.”
